Baseboards are easy to overlook, but they frame every room and quietly set the tone for a space. The right profile can make ceilings feel taller, give a room a more tailored, custom feel, and tie your trim story together with the doors and casings. Here are the baseboard styles we are seeing most in current interiors, and what makes each one work.
Flat or Square Modern Baseboard
A clean, flat board with a simple squared-off top and no decorative detailing. This is the defining look of modern and minimalist interiors. It is understated, easy to keep clean, and lets the architecture and furnishings take center stage.
Tall Baseboards
Anything from five to eight inches and up, often paired with a simple flat profile. Taller baseboards feel intentional and upscale, give rooms a sense of grounded proportion, and are one of the easiest ways to make a standard space feel more custom.
Stepped or Reveal Baseboard
A flat baseboard set with a small gap, or reveal, where it meets the wall or floor, creating a subtle shadow line. This crisp, architectural detail feels distinctly contemporary and gives trim a built-in, high-end look without any ornamentation.
Flush Baseboard
Set flush with the wall surface rather than protruding from it, sometimes with a reveal above. This is the most minimal option of all, popular in very modern and gallery-style homes. It takes more careful installation but delivers an exceptionally clean, seamless line.
Stepped or Profiled Classic Baseboard
A taller board with a stepped top edge or a soft molded cap, the more traditional profile. While the overall trend leans clean and simple, a refined stepped baseboard still shines in transitional and classic homes, adding warmth and a sense of craftsmanship.
